The Backwaters are an area of tidal creeks, mudflats, islands, salt marshes and marsh grounds. The Backwaters are an internationally important breeding ground for Little Terns and a wintering ground for Dark-bellied Brent Geese, wild fowl and waders. It also supports communities of coastal plants which are extremely rare in Britain including Hog’s Fennel. Because of this the site is listed as a RAMSAR site, labeling it as an internationally important wetland for birds. The Backwaters are also home tho the UK's most common marine mammals, both common and grey seals can be spotted here.
