The Pong Dam wetland in the state has been recognised as the safest and pollution-free refuge for migratory birds visiting north India in the winter. This year, the dam, one of the largest manmade wetlands of north India and also a Ramsar site, recorded approximately 1.45 lakh migratory birds, almost 30 per cent more than the number counted in the last census. The new recognition by bird watchers and conservationists has motivated the state wildlife wing to set in motion a management plan for the Pong Dam wetland and sanctuary area around it.
