Floral Biodiversity of Crete

Floral Biodiversity of Crete

Please provide clear photographs, location/altitude and date of spotting. Any notes on surrounding habitat/land use and soil type would also be useful, if possible. If spotting unique or heirloom Cretan varieties of crop plants, please, if possible, can you send me (by email or facebook) the contact information for the farm(er)/grower. Also, if you see beehives near to your spotting, that would be useful to know about too.

Crete has a special and unique flora with a very high level of biodiversity and many endemic species that do not exist anywhere else in the world, plus some unique habitats. The aim of this mission is to observe and record floral biodiversity in Crete, including endemic and naturalised species. Spottings can include flowering and non-flowering plants, shrubs and trees, plus fungi. Spottings can also include Cretan "heirloom" or unique varieties of crop plants (trees, fruit, vegetables, herbs etc). Plants known to provide nectar, pollen, resin or other substances for honeybees are of special interest also. My goal is to use the information gathered towards education and conservation of the Cretan biodiversity, habitats, ecology and populations of honeybees and other pollinators.
