Field Notes

Description:

1/4" long larvae. Deep orange in color with a dark line running down the center of the back. Dark spots line both sides of that line.

The adult flat bark beetle is a vibrant red, and is quite flat.

Habitat:

Prairie restoration area with cut trees. Larvae found under bark of dead trees.

Notes:

I have actually been looking for red flat bark beetles the past couple of days. They are one of my favorite beetles, but haven't found an adult yet this year. However, I have found several of the larvae, so I should be seeing some adults soon.

Agree andrecoppe! I love the flat, shiny appearance of them. The adults are really cool as well.
Very interesting the shape of these larvae!
