Carpenter Ant

Camponotus chromaiodes

Description:

Large ant. Front half of abdomen bright orange, back half of abdomen black, the rest of body dark brownish-red. Visible hairs on abdomen. Would not stop moving so I could take its picture! Probably a major worker.

Habitat:

Bank of small creek in woods, in the leaf litter

Notes:

Look how beautiful it is! This species of carpenter ant is named chromaiodes because of the striking color combo with the red-orange.
