Conifer False Morel

Gyromitra sp. (possibly esculenta)

Description:

This fungi was about 8 cm tall and about the same width. Reddish-brown exterior with a very short, stout whitish stem. Interior was hollow and white (see broken piece)

Habitat:

This specimen was found along a wood chip/grass path along a ridge in predominantly a hardwood forest--there were a few scattered pines, especially along the bluff edges. The spotting occurred in May.
