Southern Unstriped Scorpion

Vaejovis carolinianus

Description:

Small scorpion (body around 2.5-3 cm), but an adult of this species. Brown with a hint of reddish. Looks scary in photos, but it really wasn't. Very non-confrontational and retreating. Poor little thing was terrified of me and kept trying to run away and hide. It's not very fast, though. I had to hold it down with a twig (gently) to get a good shot of its stinger.

Habitat:

Found hiding under a rock, clinging to the bottom of it. In woods behind house. The ground in that spot is often damp, and it's shaded for most of the day. Scorpion has termites, ants, and spiders for neighbors. I've found scorpions of the same kind in the basement of my house, but dead.

Notes:

Finally found one of these!
