Pitayo (Pitaya Cactus)

Stenocereus griseus

Description:

A large cactus from about 3-4m height, each arm was not bigger than 15cm in diameter. They build large groups through all the dry mountains of the dessert.

Habitat:

This desert known as "Infiernillo" (spanish for "little hell") is a dry, hot, and barren land in between mountains. As I passed there the last days of winter the temperatures outside ranged around 38 degrees celsius.

Notes:

Outside in this dessert you don't see much life, the only animals you could spot were turkey vultures waiting for their next meal (see my recent spotting "Turkey Vulture"). A quite macabre show.

Thank you Luis, it certainly looks like a Stenocereus, I'm not sure about griseus or queretaroensis. It's hard to believe they are edible, the desert was full of them!

Uploaded the first photo again, hope it's working now.
