Catnip

Nepeta cataria

Description:

Erect perennial with stiff, square stems. Leaves are downy grey, soft, heart- shaped, and toothed around the edges with white undersides, 1-2 in. Flowers are small, whitish to blue, in dense prickly whorls that almost form a spike.

Habitat:

Catnip will grow in partial shade, but the sunnier the spot, the stronger the plant and its minty aroma. Likes lime and sandy, well- drained soil, but will grow in clay. Tolerates drought, but best with regular watering.

Notes:

Used, in past, as culinary and medicinal herb. Many cats can't resist it.
