Aloysia triphylla. Syn. A. Citriodora
Deciduous, sprawling shrub, native to Chile and Peru. Lance shaped, yellow-green leaves, are shiny above and dull below, and grow in groups of three. Can grow to 6 ft. Small, pale lavender flowers grow in slim panicles and bloom in July or August.
Can be grown in rich or poor soil. Prefers warm, moist climate. Once well established, hardy to about 15F, if roots well mulched.
Sometimes called "queen of the lemons", it was introduced to Europe by Spanish explorers. Its fragrant essential oil is used for many things. The leaves, dried or fresh, also make an excellent hot or iced tea. Fresh leaves can be used in flavoring salads, jellies, and desserts.
