Feral Piglets

Sus scrofa

Description:

Its that time of year! Spring piglets, followed by unusually fat alligators. Came across this family just outside of a photo blind in the cypress slough, they slept all day long, didnt move for hours.

Habitat:

Feral throughout Florida, photographed in the cypress slough-dry season.

Notes:

Feral pigs and offspring highly abundant in the slough. Piglets are adorable. Got many photos of them today. It will be interesting to see if they are in this same spot next week...

Added some new pics. It is unfortunate what happens to these animals in some places. According to rangers I've spoken with at 6 Mile Cypress Slough Preserve, where these pics were taken, pigs are periodically live trapped and removed. Taken somewhere to be tested for desease, and yes-slaughtered. They say the meat IS used but the details of where and by whom are sketchy. I'll try to find out more details upon my next visit. I find these animals very interesting to watch and extremely intelligent, not to mention the piglets are adorable. People say they are very damaging to the land, to crops and farm land I totally understand, but in the wild areas I would think they would be somewhat beneficial, churning up the soil, and providing a food source for predators. I geuss its a "fine line" sort of thing...poor little pigs :( @Emma-I'm glad I missed that documentary! Yes, disturbing indeed...

I hear ya Emma...it's a sad situation and I can't stand "fun" killing. I have heard in texas in some areas they offer paid hunts from helicopters but they do not harvest the meat. Apparently when processing meat things need to be cleaned in between wild and domestic so they just waste the meat. Is very sad it is just wasted. If we would eat our invasives like most people eat chicken invasives might not be that big of a problem.

Beautiful Joseph. I recently saw a documentary on how they are getting rid of pigs thru hunting. they did not even hesitate to show how a pregnant sow with 6 babies in her womb was hunted down . in fact they were bragging about how they got rid of 7 pigs at a time. spare us poor people the details!! We know there is a problem but do not broadcast the mass killing on TV in such a matter of fact way! i tis disturbing..
