We moved a board and discovered the ants had moved their "babies" under it to mature in the warmth generated by the sun on the board. This is an annual occurence and we have found them in the frame for a sign in the window, and in a Bunn coffee maker next to the hot water well.

You can see the ants easily enough - the are black and roughly the same size as the pupae. The brown on the outside is dirt, probably brought up with the pupa
Is the stuff on the outside ants? Or is it just dirt.
