Australian sheep blowfly

Lucilia cuprina

Description:

Lucilia cuprina is a species of blow fly characterized by a metallic outer appearance and reddish eyes. They usually have a shiny green or greenish/blue abdomen with bronze/coppery reflections. Because of this, Lucilia species are known as the bronze bottle flies.

Notes:

I'm not into bugs, so I have no idea what the proper name is. All I can tell...it's a regular fly .

Possibly a banded blowfly as suggested by Johan. If someone could confirm, it would be great.

Hi Mari, looks like a banded blowfly (Chrysomya albiceps). Might be a good thing to invest in a "Field Guide to Insects of South Africa" from Kalahari @ about R260. There are more bugs than birds or mammals and its a handy reference to have around. Regards
