I think this is some sort of insect activity, but I'm not sure. It was at the base of the tree near the roots
I believe it was on an oak tree. Photos 2&3 show the only leaves left on the tree and the bark to help with ID

It might be a gall, formed by some type of insect?
It might be done, by some type of insect borer?
