White Ginger

Hedychium coronarium

Description:

The white ginger plant does not grow very high. It is an herb that grows up to 3 - 4 feet tall. They have long, and large dark green leaves branching from a very thin stem. The leaves somewhat resemble those of a ti leaf tree. The herb blooms white flowers, which grow in clusters, or bundles, as can be seen in the picture above. Hints of yellow can also be seen on certain parts of the flower. As the plant dies, the leaves will brown, and eventually dry up. In the photograph, you can see small brown patches on the flowers, where they are dying.

Habitat:

The white ginger comes from Jamaica. They prefer tropical, somewhat moist environments to grow and thrive. This particular plant was found in Kaneohe, on Oahu.

Notes:

One of the most common uses for white ginger is tea. The flowers are also a common part of leis, or garlands. It is also used for cooking in a variety of dishes.
