Red squirrel

Tamiasciurus hudsonicus

Habitat:

Coniferous forests. They often nest in the largest trees or create middens at the base of the largest trees in a forest stand. This guy was using Douglas fir trees.

Notes:

This squirrel was in a small stand of mature Douglas fir trees. There were lots of squirrel nests and a huge cone midden that looked like years of accumulation. This squirrel vocalized aggressively at us and then hid in a cavity.
