Ant and orchid spike

Description:

Large ants, dark brown with hughe jaws.

Habitat:

They actually live inside the shoots of the Myrmecophila christinae orchid, which are actaully hollow. The colony protects the orchid against herbivores, specially the flowers, so the flower remains attractive to pollinators. The main visitors are large carpenter bees (Xylocopa sp.)

Notes:

This individual is patrolling the spike of the orchid, it will attack any thing including humans, if they consider them a danger to the plant.
