I almost picked it up, thinking it was a hair ball from one of my dogs but stopped myself when it suddenly started walking... Good job it did, as thanks to your identification I now know that this harmless looking caterpillar actually has very venomous spines.

Very interesting! It looks like some kind of puss moth caterpillar (Megalopygidae sp.) which have stinging hairs.
