Melanitis phedima
Brown with one large eyespot on the top; white, black and orange. Two tinier ones at the bottom.
Winter is setting in and these butterflies are dying...I picked this one up from the dusty floor of a bank and photographed it in my car...it was recently deceased (I know we are not supposed to post dead animals, sorry).
Most likely this is Bengal Dark Evening Brown. M. phedima subspecies bela. Dry season form. http://www.ifoundbutterflies.org/sp/736/... All thanks to bayucca
Nymphalidae, Satyrinae, Melanitini, Melanitis sp., cannot really tell if Melanitis phedima or Melanitis leda. I think we might have more pictures, mostly from the upperside to get a safe ID. Maybe someone else can help more. These 2 species are both occuring in India, bith are extremely variable and from both are saisonal variations around. I slightly would tend to Melanitis phedima, without really knowing why ;-)...
