Brandon, your thoughts led me to an answer.....it is not a phlox, but another plant that looks quite similar - the dame's rocket. Thanks for the tip that helped our research!

they look like a breed of wild phlox. however I am not 100% on that, most wild phlox flowers have five petals. These have four.
