Galapagos Giant Tortoise

Description:

This individual can be found in the tortoise breeding center of Isabela. It is one of the adults that were taken from the wild in order to establish a breeding population. It's exact age is not known but is estimated to be over 80

Habitat:

This subspecies can be found on the island of Isabella around the Cerro Azul volcano. The domed tortoises are able to live in the wet, colder climes of the highlands while the saddlebacks are best adapted to the dry, hot lowlands

Notes:

There are no known tortoises on Isabela that can produce clutches that survive the incubation period. Invasive species have made survival for these animals all but impossible without human intervention.
