I was confused because I saw photos that looked like my crab identified as Gecarcinus quadratus, the Halloween crab. But I now think those are simply misidentified (What! You mean everything you read on the internet isn't necessarily true?). So I did some more digging and learned a few things...Gecarcinus lateralis is the Caribbean equivalent of the Halloween crab - that is, G. quadratus lives on the Pacific coast, and G. lateralis on the Caribbean side. It seems my crab isn't Gecarcinus at all. I believe it is Cardisoma crassum. It also is restricted to the Pacific coast. There is another Cardisoma sp. that takes it's place on the Caribbean coast .
