bayucca, I cannot shed any further light on this spotting. Cats can vary between instars and I think we may need a specialist for this one. I have photographed a heavily infested one last week that may be related. I will post this now.

Erebidae,, Lymantriinae, Orgyiini. Looks at first sight like Olene mendosa, but I am not 100% sure. I am missing the white/black tufts at the side. Could also be an Orgyia sp., unfortunately there are several Orgyia sp. found in Australia.

So, I am still not convinced about any Orgyia sp. or Olene mendosa.
Maybe some of our Aussie friends might help...
