Dromaius novaehollandiae
Second-largest bird in the world. Long legs and a shaggy hut-shaped back covered with grey-brown feathers. White patch on side of face so that the eye is sharply defined against it.
This one was in a field just outside the Rann Riders Camp and off the highway, Little Rann of Kutch, Gujarat. It ran from one field into another and for one startled moment I thought I would have to battle it if it charged me and my sister! Thankfully it was simply relocating to the next field. I know Ostrich kick can fell a man...can an Emu be far behind?
I first saw it in the fading evening light on the 12th and rubbed my eye in disbelief. The next day it was still there; sleeping in the fields. As the Sun rose, so did it. I inquired if there were Emu farms nearby because I had read about (largely failed) Emu-breeding enterprises. I got a YES nod as an answer. So, this one is a feral Emu doing quite well for itself.

:) I could not believe my eyes..early in the morning I have crossed the premises of the resort I was staying in ...agricultural fields in front of me...and then, there is this massive bird...an emu?! I nearly died of shock before I remembered Emu farming being introduced (and failing) in India.
Wow! That's amazing. Thanks for showing this. The world is crazy... wild kangaroos in Hawaii and France.. ostriches and llamas running around here. People are nuts. I hope he sends a postcard.
