Pygmy shrew

Sorex minutus

Description:

UK smallest mammal. 5cm long with a tail that is 2/3 the body length. Continually on the hunt for spiders, insects and snails (of which there are plenty to go round!)

Habitat:

Garden hedge. I popped it into a container and rehoused in a different part of the garden away from inquisitive cats.

Ah! How wonderful. One day a shrew (ordinary one) got into my drawing room and I just Failed to even corner it!!!! I have no idea where it went or how it escaped with me trying to catch it. Was just glad it did not die inside my house in an inaccessible corner ....I sometimes see shrews run over by cars ...so I know they are around but except that one day I have never seen a live one in my neighbourhood..

We used the little net from our aquarium. We had been allerted by the attentions of a cat and it got itself into a corner.

Beautiful spotting, Mel. I had no idea there was such an animal. Tiny, but obviously ferocious. Love it!
