Musk Turtles and Snapping Turtles are commonly mistaken for each other. They do have similarities in their facial features and often when you pick them up they will open their mouth to defend itself as snappers do. Snapping Turtles can also release a musky, foul odor when they are frightened as Musk Turtles do. I have a small snapper and it has released its musk before and it was not pleasant.
