Almost all herpetofauna change color depending on temperature, therefore it is a really bad character to use to ID them. Fringe scales and the horn pattern on the head are a very easy way to ID horned lizards, in addition to range maps.

It's very difficult to ID these lizards because they can change their color to match the ground like a chameleon.
