Coniferous
Evergreens come in two types: common needled conifers, such as pines; and broad-leafed evergreens, such as the mountain laurel. Some also fall into the drought-tolerant category and need little water.
Most evergreens prefer sunny locations with well-drained soil, according to horticulturalists on Colorado State University Extension website. Mulching keeps the soil moist for them and prevents weeds from growing that might compete for nutrients. When subjected to dry, windy or hot weather, many evergreens benefit from extra watering.
Evergreen trees maintain their green foliage even in winter. Unlike deciduous trees that lose their leaves in the winter, evergreen trees maintain their foliage year-round. This means that even in the coldest weather, evergreens, such as pines, firs and junipers, provide gardens with green color and life.
