Eastern Wild Turkey

Meleagris gallopavo

Description:

Wild turkey hen and brood of juvenile chicks.

Habitat:

Rural Eastern NC, fields and woods.

Notes:

Wild turkey hen and her brood of juvenile chicks. They walked into our yarden, up the stairs to the porch, on the porch and attempted to come inside. The hen responded to my husbands voice (very low pitched), approached him and let him touch her. They stayed for about a half-hour feeding in the grass and lounging on the porch, then went back into the woods. We did not see them again, although a solitary Tom was around this spring (2012).
