Soapberry Tree

Sapindus sp.

Description:

This small tree was purchased at a Native Plant sale. Finally, it has soapberries. These trees are either male (no berries) or female. They spread to create thickets. The soapberries will become transparent when ripe and can be used as a soap.

Habitat:

Side garden where the wild things go to grow as they please.

Notes:

Sapindus is a genus of about five to twelve species of shrubs and small trees in the Lychee family. Members of the genus are commonly known as soapberries or soapnuts because the fruit pulp is used to make soap.
