Furrowed Orb Weaver Spider

Larinioides cornutus

Description:

Hiding in the top of a Hardy Hibiscus set of buds. It was trying to catch one of the Long-legged flys that were on the leaves.

Habitat:

These spiders are most often found in moist areas, especially near water. The web is built between grass or in low shrubbery. They hide during the day in a silken retreat that opens at the bottom, masked with plant and animal matter and leave it during the night. The web is remade in the evening

Notes:

The garden is about half an acre of native plants specifically planted for wildlife. The main water source is a pond that is filtered by two gravel streams. It is on a peninsula by Lake Lewisville, TX.
