A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
This beautiful specimen is about 1 inch long. It is true bug and earns it's name from the distinctive, "stinky" smell it releases from its repugnatorial glands. It has the characteristic "broad shouldered" profile with a large triangular plate called the scutellum between its wings.
This specimen was found in the ReNePeru Medicinal plant garden located near Explornapo Lodge. Makes you wonder if some of the chemicals in the medicinal plants are what give this bug its powerful smell!
This picture doesn't do the color justice. In real life the colors are even more vibrant - especially the blue green of the scutellum.

Great macro!!
I agree! Probably an Edessa sp. but definitely not Edessa rufomarginata!
Personally I don't think that this one is Edessa rufomarginata. This one would have a red border and different underside markings with drker stripes which the amazone bug has not and Rufomarginata does not have such black and yellow stripes on the margin. Might be an Edessa sp. nevertheless.
That would be my guess based on a field guide (Amazon Insects by James L. Castner) to the area that has a picture of Edessa rufmarginata http://www.flickriver.com/photos/artour_...
Edessini??
Same one, unfortunately without ID...
