Pronghorn

Antilocapra americana

Description:

Pronghorns are fast mammals of America's western prairies and deserts. Males may weigh 36–70 kg (79–150 lb). Females weight slightly less They have beautiful brown and white marked coats. Males have interesting horns. While they are branched, they are not considered antlers. Another oddity about pronghorns is that they shed the outer horn sheath, again not very horn-like as horns are never shed.

Habitat:

Typically unbroken grasslands and deserts in western North America.

Notes:

This doe had given birth to two fawns at the northwest entrance to the park and in sight of the famous Arch. Every morning she would hunt up the fawns, which were hidden about 100 meters apart, and let them nurse. Afterwards, the two young ones would run and play. Then she would hide them until their noon feeding. Fun to watch
