True Weevil

Subfamily: Mesoptiliinae

Description:

A dark brown weevil about 4 mm in length. The elytra had small white patches and the thorax had a bright reddish "v"-shaped mark along the posterior margin.Segmented antennae had club-shaped tips. It was difficult to see or photograph the rostrum.

Habitat:

Spotted on black wattle in a linear reserve.

Notes:

Weevils in this family are called "true weevils". Antennae are almost alwys elbowed with a 3-segmented club.
There are about 40,000 described weevils in this family in the world and about the same number yet to be described. This makes it the largest family of living creatures.
There are about 6500 described weevil species in Australia.
To date this particular curculionid appears to have been identified by experts to subfamily level only.
