Description:

Dead heads in winter. Height up to 2 meters. Produces rosette of spine-coated leaves in first year. In second year, conical heads of purple flowers are borne on tall, angled and spiny stems.

Habitat:

Biennial of damp grasslands on heavy, often disturbed soils. Found here by the edge of a muddy footpath alongside a small river.
