Wijngaardslak - Roman snail

Helix pomatia

Description:

A rather large land snail with a cream to light brown shell and a grey body. It is an edible species and for this reason it has almost disappeared in some areas. In the Netherlands it is now a protected animal species to prevent its extinction.

Habitat:

Warmer, lime stone rich areas, preferably along the edge of a forest. Cannot stand direct sunlight or heavy rain fall. Originally from South and Central Europe but has since been spread to various parts around the world.

Notes:

Found in the woods on the Cauberg in Valkenburg, Limburg. Near the open-air theatre.
