Black KIte

Milvus migrans

Description:

A medium-sized bird of prey in the family Accipitridae, which also includes many other diurnal raptors. It is thought to be the world's most abundant species of Accipitridae, although some populations have experienced dramatic declines or fluctuations. Current global population estimates run up to 6 million individuals.

Habitat:

This bird was sitting on a post in Mullers Lagoon park, doing a Linda Blair [The Exorcist] impersonation.

Notes:

Whenever there is a decent bush-fire around the area, the entire population of these birds fly through the heavy smoke like it's not there diving after ground-animals escaping the fire. There must be 3,000 in this area alone.
