A colorful "monkey grasshopper" nymph with an interesting resting posture -- hind legs usually held splayed out to the side -- which appears to be generally characteristic of this group. The (short-horned) grasshopper is an insect of the suborder Caelifera in the order Orthoptera. Recent estimates indicate some 2,400 valid Caeliferan genera and about 11,000 valid species described to date. Many undescribed species exist, especially in tropical wet forests. The Caelifera are predominantly tropical. < http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grasshopper... >
Spotted on vegetation along transect in secondary coastal lowland mixed freshwater swamp forest/sago swamp forest.
The cloth material you see is an upside-down kiddie umbrella we were using to look for micro weevils. Shake a bush and theoretically they are captured in the funnel of the umbrella. We didn't find any of those but got plenty of other cool species like this grasshopper nymph!

Thanks Martin. Thanks Juan for the tip!
This is probably a Monkey Grasshopper (Eumastacidae)
He looks quite at home and well camouflaged in that umbrella. I suspect you will find an ID for this one. Bizarre!
