Plasmodial slime mold

Fuligo sp.

Description:

I was interested to find out that each "lesion" on this live tree comprises a bunch of undifferentiated cells. The biggest aggregate (first photo) is 3 cm in size.

Habitat:

Found in a temperate woodland on a riverbank.

Notes:

The organism gives the tree the appearance of cigarette-burn marks and confused me, as it is rather dried out. Whether this slime mold is alive or dead, its movement would be imperceptible.
