Silene uniflora Roth
A pretty white flower with distinctive, fleshy leaves. Sea Campion is related to the carnation. Other names by which it is known are 'dead man's bells', 'witches' thimbles' and 'Devil's hatties'.
Sea Campion grows atop cliffs and amongst shingle, on coastlines throughout the UK and Ireland.
According to folklore, Sea Campion should never be picked for fear of tempting death. Given its habit of growing on the edge of cliff-tops, this was probably apt advice!
Looked at many varieties of this flower online, and decided to go with Uniflora because it grows along cliffs in Ireland. Decided against Silene vulgaris (Bladder Campion) as the flower petal seemed forked in this variety, and the bladders didn't seem so colourful. Thanks Janet and Alice for your ID and suggestion, and for stimulating my investigative nature!
