American White Pelican

Pelecanus erythrorhynchos

Description:

White large water fowl. 4 ft tall 9 ft wide wingspan. Black edge on wings. Orange yellow bill with pouch. Where the Brown Pelican dives for it's food, the White Pelican catches it near the surface. Gray heads belong to non breeding males

Habitat:

inland shallow freshwater lakes, wet prairies and marshes in the summer and on coastal lagoons in the winter
