Nice spotting! You are correct in that it's a water snake. Massachusetts only has one species, so the ID was fairly easy. :-) One thing I always like to clear up with people is the whole "aggressive" label. Snakes don't like being approached when out in the open because they're exposed, vulnerable, and we're HUGE as compared to them. In a situation like yours, the snake was merely being defensive. I have always considered that to be MUCH different than aggressive. Just my opinion as a snake guy. :-)
