Prairie Rattlesnake

Crotalus viridis

Description:

A young male rattlesnake attempting to cross a road riddled with oil truck traffic. 4 more rattlesnakes were observed dead along this same stretch of road in Weld County, Colorado.

Habitat:

short-grass prairie and wheat fields

Notes:

In the video you will see typical behavior of a rattlesnake when approached. The snakes first response is to freeze to avoid detection. If harrassed, the snake then postures and rattles, It will continue this behavior until left alone. Not once did this snake strike or attempt to bite even when gently relocated off the road. http://youtu.be/elQ2uvWyWi0

Thanks For this beautiful video and spotting! It is quite saddening when a rattle snake is hurt unnecessarily! Thank you so much!
