Haliaeetus leucocephalus
Bald Eagle, when grown is a large bird. The matured adult Bald Eagle is evenly brown with a white head and tail. The beak, feet and irides are bright yellow. The tail is moderately long and slightly wedge-shaped. Males and females are identical in plumage coloration, but sexual dimorphism is evident in the species in that females are 25 percent larger than males.
Bald Eagle is found near large bodies of open water with an abundant food supply and old-growth trees for nesting.
Bald Eagles circle and perch on outposts of old timbers along the bay and shoreline. Bald Eagle will stay perched for hours if not disturbed. In flight I typically see Bald Eagles being mobbed by smaller bird species found in the Bald Eagles feeding area. I once observed a Bald Eagle dropping the remains of a fish it had fed on, into a flock of Gulls. I watched the Bald Eagle bath in a creek after a meal of fish. Young Bald Eagles are accompanied by their parent(s) in the spring flights. I enjoy watching Bald Eagles. The Bald Eagle is a patient fisherman.
