Giant swallowtail caterpillar

Papilio cresphontes

Description:

approx. 2 inches long; here in a defensive posture

Habitat:

spotted on small key lime tree in front yard

Notes:

These caterpillars are colored to mimic bird droppings as a first line of defense. Failing that, they rear up and expose their osmeterium which are far more foul smelling than even the nastiest of birds.
