Billbug

Sphenophorus sp.

Description:

all black with light grey markings, about 6mm

Habitat:

meadow

Notes:

I spotted this on a trail at Short Hills. I was lucky to spot it and lucky that it didn't move much when I photographed it. It was in a weird spot on the trail and was difficult to get into a good position to photograph it from multiple angles.

Thanks J, I'm happy enough with an ID to the genus for now.

There are several similar, if not, almost identical, billbugs in the weevil genus Sphenophorus. You might want to submit this to www.bugguide.net, if you want to possibly find a species.
