Bee Orchid

Ophyrys apifera

Description:

A small orchid that mimics a bumblebee visiting a pink flower. This is to fool bumblebees - which pollinate the plant - into trying to mate with what looks like a potential mate.

Habitat:

Open grassland on base-rich soil.They quite like a bit of disturbance and I have even found them (the photo above) on a disused rubbish tip!
