Moose

Alces alces

Description:

DescriptionThe moose or elk, Alces alces, is a member of the New World deer subfamily and is the largest and heaviest extant species in the deer family. Moose are distinguished by the broad, palmate antlers of the males; other members of the deer family have antlers with a dendritic configuration.

Habitat:

The moose lives in forested areas where there is snow cover in the winter and nearby lakes, bogs, swamps, streams and ponds. The moose's large size makes survival in warm climates difficult, and they have difficulty when temperatures rise above 80 degrees Fahrenheit. In the summer, they cool off in the water.

Notes:

I took this picture while I was in Wyoming, and the chances of seeing a moose in Wyoming let alone a bull moose are extremely slim. We were trout fishing and ran across the meadow and it was stunning.
