Xylocopa caffra
Large (body length 20-24 mm), stout. Females are black and hairy, with 2 bands of yellow hairs on last part of thorax and first segment of abdomen. Males patrol fixed areas around flowers, twigs or leaves of particular bushes and trees. As in all carpenter bees, females house special mites in a chamber on the abdomen.
Fynbos, succulent karoo, dry savanna woodland and coastal bush.
