I'm a biologist/zookeeper, centipede fan, and live in Oklahoma. :-)
Subspecies are a touchy subject because taxonomists argue over them all the time. I've seen this one with and without the subspecific name, so I guess it all comes down to personal preference. Some say S. heros ranges from Arizona to Oklahoma and down into Mexico, with the different looks simply being color variants. I personally don't think "desert centipede" aptly describes the giant Scolopendra that we have in Oklahoma. That is just personal preference. :-)
Forget I said anything and leave your spotting as it is. It's just fine. I was simply butting in and adding an information suggestion.
Where are you getting your info from? I googled similar pics of the centipede I found and I was positive it's commonly referred to as a giant desert centipede
I don't know if "desert" belongs in the common name of this centipede. Scolopendra heros has a few subspecies and this is one of them, although many are found in southwestern states. It's known as Scolopendra heros castaneiceps, and red-headed centipede is a better fitting common name. :-)
